Told a client in Tulsa to pay half upfront on a $3,200 job, and his reply caught me off guard
Everyone in my circle keeps saying to drop clients who won't pay a deposit, but I think that advice is way too cut and dry. Last month I had a guy in Tulsa who wanted a full fence rebuild, and when I sent over the contract with 50 percent down on the $3,200 total, he went quiet for four days. I almost wrote him off, but instead of sending a stiff reminder I just called and asked if the timing was bad. Turns out he was waiting on a check from his own client (a real estate guy who pays slow every single time) and he offered to do $800 now and the rest in two weeks. I took it, put the start date two weeks out, and he actually paid the full deposit early. So now I'm second guessing the whole no deposit no work rule, because a phone call and a little flex kept a paying client happy. Has anyone else found that a smaller starter payment works better than sticking hard to half down?
