Writing bills by hand in 2006 vs now, and one client who taught me a lesson
Back when I mailed paper bills from my kitchen table in Boise, I lost $600 on a job because I never got a signature on the change order. Now I snap a photo of anything extra and text it over before I leave the site, and I have not eaten a cost like that since. Does anyone still keep paper copies just in case, or is that just me being old?
The paper copy thing is less about being old and more about what holds up if things go sideways. A text photo is great until the client gets a new phone or clears their messages, and suddenly your proof is gone. Paper in a drawer does not delete itself. My bigger point though is the timestamp. A phone photo has the date and time baked in, which is worth more than any paper in a drawer for showing when you flagged the extra work. So keep the paper if it makes you sleep better, but the photo should be your real backup.
