Honestly, my trick for getting through a slow-burn show is to watch the first three episodes at double speed before committing.

Tbh, I was ready to drop 'The Leftovers' after a confusing pilot, but speeding through the setup episodes in under 90 minutes let me finally get hooked on the actual story, so has anyone else used a weird speed-watching rule to stick with a show?

Actually, my rule is the opposite for shows with a big visual style. I watched the first season of "Mad Men" at normal speed, but then rewatched those same episodes at 1.5x. It sounds odd, but seeing all the costumes and sets flash by faster made the mood of the show feel even stronger, like a long music video. It helped me notice the look of the thing more than the slow plot.

Rewatched Mad Men at 1.5x, @miaprice? That's wild.

Honestly that's a really cool way to watch, @miaprice. Tbh I never thought about speeding something up to get the mood better. @matthew_west, I get why it sounds wild, but her point about it feeling like a long music video makes a weird kind of sense. Makes me want to try it with a show that's all about the look.
