I gave up on The Bear after 4 episodes and went back to watching Cheers reruns
Everyone keeps telling me The Bear is the best binge of the decade, so I sat down over a weekend in January and forced myself through 4 episodes. The first episode was honestly great, but by episode 4 it felt like the show was just yelling at me with no payoff, so I switched over to my 40 year old Cheers DVDs and watched 9 episodes in a row without checking my phone once. Same thing happened with Succession, made it 5 episodes in and never went back. I think the difference is those old shows let scenes breathe for 2 or 3 minutes instead of cutting every 4 seconds. Am I the only one who thinks the fast editing style is ruining shows that everyone swears are masterpieces?
Did you just describe my exact relationship with every "prestige" show from the last ten years? My wife still gives me a hard time about tapping out on Succession during episode 5, and honestly I'd rather rewatch Sam and Diane bicker for the hundredth time than sit through another anxiety attack scene scored to loud drums. The thing about Cheers is you can actually follow a conversation, the camera holds still, and the jokes land because the actors get room to breathe instead of getting chopped up into a million quick cuts. I lasted maybe three episodes of The Bear before I felt like I needed a nap and a Xanax. Some of us just want TV that doesn't feel like a panic attack, and that's not a crime.
