Just realized I had been quitting shows at episode 4 for a whole year
Last Tuesday I looked at my streaming history and saw I bailed on 9 different shows this year, all around episode 4, because nothing big had happened yet. A buddy in Portland mentioned that The Wire took him until episode 6 to get hooked, so I went back and gave one of my dropped shows two more episodes, and sure enough it clicked. How many episodes do you give a show before you call it quits?
Watching nine shows get abandoned at the same spot is honestly kind of impressive. You basically made a hobby out of watching pilot seasons and calling it a day. The Wire thing is real though, that show tests your patience like a bad relationship before it finally pays off. Four episodes is way too early to bail, that's usually right when the story is still setting up the pieces. I give stuff at least six episodes unless it's clearly terrible, because some of the best shows take a while to warm up. My rule is simple, if episode six still bores me then it's gone for good.
