Appreciation post: the working forge at Fort Vancouver finally got a new leather bellows setup
I stopped by the blacksmith shop at Fort Vancouver in Washington last Saturday and watched them run the rebuilt double chamber bellows for about 20 minutes. The smith told me the old one had a crack in the valve board that was letting air slip, so they could only get maybe 60 percent of the blast they needed on a big heat. Seeing the coal go from dull red to bright yellow in under a minute with just a few pumps really made me rethink how much of my own crappy forge days come down to airflow and not the fire itself. Anyone else here running a leather bellows instead of a blower, and how often do you have to redo the hinge leather on it?
