First time trying a coal forge after 8 years of propane

Finally got my hands on an old coal forge at a swap meet in Ohio and gave it a shot last weekend. The heat control is way different, I kept overshooting the steel and burning thin stock. Anyone else switch from gas to coal and have tips for reading the fire better?

Read somewhere you should pull the fire ring out to see the color true.

Pull the ring out and you're just staring at the top edge. That only works if you're looking straight down the throat.
