Spent 3 hours chasing a cold shut in a 6 inch billet, coil spring or leaf spring for the next one?
Had a cold shut open up on me in a 6 inch billet last Friday, and I burned almost 3 hours scarfing it out and rewelding before I got a clean forge weld. Half the old timers I know swear leaf spring is the only way to go, but my buddy in Columbus says coil spring forges way cleaner and welds tighter. Curious what you all reach for when you need reliable stock for a big weld, and has anyone else had a cold shut eat a whole afternoon like that?
