Spent 6 hours chasing a cold shut because I skipped one step at the anvil
Last Thursday I was forging a set of 4 hooks from 3/8 inch round bar and kept getting a cold shut right at the shoulder where the bend meets the shank. I kept turning up the heat and hitting it harder, which just made it worse. After 6 hours and a lot of wasted stock I finally figured out my anvil edge was too sharp and I was folding the metal over on itself without realizing it. I dressed the edge with a flap disc and the next hook came out clean in 20 minutes. Check your anvil edges before you blame your technique, has anyone else lost a whole afternoon to a tool problem they didn't see coming?
