A guy at a game night in Portland spent 20 minutes arguing that Catan is broken, then flipped the board
So I'm at this weekly board game meetup at a bar in Portland, and there's this one dude who always brings his own copy of Catan plus like three expansions nobody asked for. About 40 minutes into a game, he starts going off about how the dice are rigged and the robber is "objectively bad design," which, fine, everyone complains about the robber. But then he actually dumped the whole board off the table when my friend Rob stole his longest road, and rolled a 7 on the way down for good measure. The bartender just looked at him and said "sir, that's a $60 game," and he packed up and left without a word. Anyway, does anyone else have a rule about banning expansions at casual nights, or is that just me being dramatic?
We had the exact same problem at our Thursday game group and ended up making a simple rule that saved the whole night. Base game only for casual meetups, and if someone really wants expansions, they have to host their own table and warn people ahead of time. The turning point for us was a guy who brought five tiny card games with rulebooks longer than my grocery list and then got mad when nobody wanted to learn them at 9pm on a work night. Keeping it to one game everyone already knows means we actually finish a round and nobody storms out. Your guy flipping the board over longest road is wild, but the robber does make people act up, so I get why you want limits. You are not being dramatic, you are just protecting the vibe.
