Just realized that guy at the board game cafe was right about teaching new players too fast

He told me last year to take twice as long explaining the rules or nobody comes back, and after rushing through a game of Root with three newbies last week I had two of them say they'd never play again, so has anyone else had that kind of advice backfire when you ignored it?

Yeah, my buddy did the same thing with chess once. Spent 10 minutes explaining everything and his new players never came back. It's like speedrunning a tutorial nobody asked for.

And that's why I now treat rule explanations like a hostage negotiation, slow and steady so nobody panics and runs for the door. Rushing through Root especially feels like you're throwing them into a political thriller without a map, no wonder they quit. At least now you've got a solid "I told you so" card to play on that guy for the next five years.
