My first 18xx game taught me nothing and I loved it
Sat down for 1889 at a local con in Portland last month with zero prep. Four hours in I still had no clue if I was winning, but somehow the chaos of buying train shares felt great. My friend kept saying 'just read the rulebook twice' but honestly half the fun was messing up stocks and watching everyone laugh. Anyone else enjoy a game more the first time when you totally fail at the strategy?

Different strokes for sure, but I gotta push back a little. Messing up stocks and laughing is fun for a bit, but after four hours of pure chaos I'd be kinda checked out. For me, the real joy comes in that second or third game when you finally see why someone made the move that seemed dumb at the time. Like when you realize a bad stock buy was actually setting up a train rush. That moment clicks way harder than the initial free-for-all. But hey, if the first game being a total mess made you smile, that's a win too.
