A pipefitter in Gary told me to stop torquing my tube fittings by feel, and now I'm second guessing every job
He said my 3/8 inch stainless lines were leaking because I wasn't using a torque wrench, but I've been doing it by feel for 12 years with no callbacks. Do you trust the spec sheet or your hands?
12 years of by-feel torquing and zero callbacks is a solid track record, but stainless is a whole different animal than brass or copper. It galls easy and a 3/8 line can feel snug when it's really only halfway there, so the wrench guys aren't totally wrong. Tbh I'd split the difference, hit a few of your normal joints with a torque wrench just to see how far off your hand is. Worst case you find out your elbow is calibrated better than you thought.
