Choosing between a 3/8-inch and a 1/2-inch drive for the main rig in my truck

I went with the 1/2-inch for the extra torque on stubborn flange bolts, and it saved me from rounding off a nut on a steam valve job in Cincinnati last week, so what's your go-to drive size for general boiler repair?

That Cincinnati story proves it. Half inch drive, no question. You just can't beat the raw power when you're dealing with old, crusty fittings. I keep a 3/8 for lighter stuff in the bag, but the big gun is my main. Trying to muscle something with a smaller drive is just asking for a bad day.

Okay but like, how often are you really running into fittings that need a half inch drive? Feels like kim.abby is maybe overstating the case a bit. Most stuff in a regular shop comes apart just fine with a good 3/8 and some patience, maybe a little heat. The big gun is cool until you're rounding off bolt heads because you went too hard too fast.

So you're telling me you almost became a permanent part of the Cincinnati skyline over a steam valve? Guess that half inch drive isn't just for bolts, it's for keeping your career path on track. My go-to is the 3/8 for most things, but I keep a cheater pipe handy for when things get stupid, which is basically always.

Totally get it, I had a frozen caliper bolt that laughed at my 3/8. Had to grab the half inch and a pipe, just like kim.abby said. Sometimes you just need that extra bit of stupid-proofing lol.
