I finally gave in and started tagging my welds after a bad Tuesday in Gary
Last Tuesday I had a code inspector walk a boiler I finished in Gary, Indiana, and he flagged three welds he couldn't trace back to me, so the whole thing got held up for two days. I used to think stamping every joint was a waste of time, just slows you down on a big run. But standing there watching a $9,000 payout sit on hold while I dug through paperwork convinced me otherwise. Now I hit each pass with a paint marker and my initials, takes maybe 4 seconds. Any of you stamp or tag welds, or do you just roll with the log book?
Why do we always wait for something to go wrong before we start doing the smart thing? I see it everywhere, not just in welding. People skip the oil change until the engine blows, skip the backup until the laptop dies, skip the label until the whole job gets held up. A few seconds of extra work up front saves you days of headache later, and that math never changes no matter what line of work you're in. Tagging your welds is just the same idea, cheap insurance that pays off the one time it matters. Two days of downtime on a 9 grand payout would've bought you a whole lot of paint markers lol.
