Old timer's 5 minute rule about soot changed my whole routine

Last Tuesday I was grinding down a firebox wall and this retired guy walked by. He watched me for a bit then said, "Soot don't care how hard you lean on it. It cares how long you let the chems sit." I always blasted it off fast and re-scrubbed. Tried his way. Sprayed, waited 5, hit it once. Barely any elbow grease needed. Saved me maybe 20 minutes per section. Anyone else get a random pointer from a stranger that stuck with you?
