That cheap welding helmet I bought in Gary cost me a redo

I grabbed a $45 auto-darkening helmet off a sale rack near Gary last spring, figured it would do for quick jobs. It flickered on me during a vertical pass and I ended up with a bead that looked like a snake with a limp, had to grind it all out and weld it again, that wasted a full afternoon and a tank of gas. Anyone else ever had a budget helmet mess up their work, or am I just lucky?
