Vent: Everyone keeps saying you need a scan tool for every check engine light. That's wrong.

Three sensors before checking the cat? That's just painful.

Rant: I used to just pick a city for cheap rent, now I run a full tax check first

Yeah, they really do creep up on you (especially after a reassessment). Cora813 is totally right about Chicago, but even in smaller towns it can be a nasty shock. My bill jumped almost twenty percent last year with no warning.

Remember when we used to mix our own enzyme peels from powder?

Honestly, I read an article about how the old DIY kits were way more effective.

Stopped by the hardware store and saw a sign that changed my payment terms

My buddy learned the hard way after a kitchen reno dragged on for three months with zero payments. Now his quotes break the total into four clear parts, like 25% to start, another 25% after demo, and so on. It turns one big scary number into smaller, regular bills that clients seem to handle way better. That "due on completion" rule beng51 mentioned is solid, but for longer jobs, breaking it up stops you from becoming the world's worst bank. It also lets you spot a payment problem early, before you're in way too deep.

Appreciation post: My uncle told me to double my rate for my first web design job

Yeah, that's the best advice. I had a cousin tell me the same thing about my first few freelance jobs, and it totally changed how I see my work now. I mean, I was doing these full branding packages for like nothing, basically what @anthonyrivera said about the free pizza, but for actual money that still felt like nothing. It's crazy how we just assume we have to start cheap to get anyone to say yes. Your uncle was spot on, and it's awesome the client just went with it. Makes you wonder how much money we all leave on the table at the start.
