Turned up my shielding gas flow like an old timer in Gary told me, and my welds stopped looking like Swiss cheese
I figured cranking the flow would just waste gas and make turbulence, but bumping from 15 to 25 cfh cleaned up the porosity on my 1/4 inch plate beads almost overnight. Anybody else run higher flow than the book says on thicker stuff, or am I just covering up a dirty nozzle?
Did you check your nozzle before cranking the gas? A dirty cup or a little spatter buildup can cause way more porosity than low flow ever will. Bumping to 25 cfh on 1/4 inch plate is pretty normal honestly, thicker metal pulls heat faster and you need that extra coverage. But 15 to 25 is a big jump, so if the porosity came back you'd know it was the cup all along.
