Can we talk about that classic novel everyone calls a masterpiece?

I was in my book club last Thursday and someone said To Kill a Mockingbird is just about racism in the South... I actually think it's more about how adults fail kids by not protecting their innocence. Scout learns that grown-ups are complicated and messy, not that racism is the only lesson. Maybe I'm wrong but I feel like people skim past that part. Has anyone else read it with that focus?

Oh wow, you're right on the money there. I always felt like the core of that book was Scout watching the adults in her life stumble through their own messes and realizing they weren't the heroes she thought they were. That stuck with me way more than the trial stuff.

Thats exactly how i felt reading it too. The part where scout realizes Atticus is just some guy trying his best instead of a perfect hero really got me. It helped me see my own parents more as people who mess up instead of some untouchable authority figures.
