I thought our club picking a 700 page book was a flex, then only 3 people finished it
Our club in Portland voted on a 700 page book last month and I was the one pushing hardest for it because longer meant deeper, right? Seven of us showed up to talk about it and only 3 had made it past page 300, so the whole night turned into the finishers explaining the ending to everyone else. Do you all put a page limit on picks, or just let people tap out and show up anyway?
My buddy Dave's club in Austin tried a 900 pager last year and got the same split, four people out of ten finished and the rest just drank wine while the book nerds argued about the symbolism. What worked for them was splitting the big book over two months with a check in halfway, so people didn't feel like they had to hide if they fell behind. Might be worth a shot if your group still wants the doorstoppers without the guilt.
