Our book club in Portland tried to discuss 'Klara and the Sun' over Zoom and it fell apart

We were about 20 minutes into the call when two members started a huge fight about whether the book was hopeful or depressing. One person yelled 'You're missing the whole point!' and then just left the meeting. The rest of us sat there in silence for a full minute. I finally said we should table it and pick a new book, which felt like giving up. Has a meeting ever gone that badly off the rails for anyone else?

Remember that podcast where they said book clubs are just fight clubs with snacks?

Oh man, that sounds rough. I used to think book clubs were supposed to be polite chats, but my old one had a total meltdown over "The Road." Someone called another person's take "morally simple" and it got real quiet, real fast. It kind of changed my mind on the whole thing, honestly. Now I figure if a book makes people that mad, it's probably doing something right, even if the meeting falls apart.

Yeah, nothing brings people together like calling their morals simple, right?
