That group read rule about page counts broke my book club last month

My club in Austin had a 40 page per week limit to keep everyone on pace, but two members finished ahead and started posting spoilers in the group chat. The rule kept things fair for slow readers, but it punished anyone with free time on a Sunday. We lost three people over the fight about whether to bump it to 60 pages or drop the cap entirely. Has anyone else had a pacing rule backfire like this, and how do you fix it without killing the fun?
