Hot take: I blew off Japanese tissue for years and the paper proved me dead wrong
For years I thought Japanese tissue was just pricey paper for people who like fancy labels, and I stuck with whatever thin scrap I had in the drawer. Then last month I was repairing a torn map fold on a 1911 atlas and the hinge kept cracking because my scrap was too stiff, so I tried a strip of 9gsm kozo a friend left at my bench in Rochester. It laid down flat, took paste without wrinkling, and you can barely see the mend under raking light. Now I'm second guessing all the stiff tissue I used on earlier jobs. What basis weight do you all keep on hand for lighter repairs?
