Spent 3 hours fixing a spine I cracked by opening a book too wide, and now I keep a wooden ruler on my bench

Ever tried to explain to someone why you own a ruler that never touches paper? Mine just sits there judging me while I promise myself I'll be gentle next time. Then a week later I hear that little crack and I want to flip my desk. At this point the ruler is less a tool and more a tiny wooden reminder that I can't be trusted with my own books.
