Lost 6 of my 9 Venus flytraps in one heat wave last July, and I think I know why
Back in July we hit 104 degrees for four days straight here in Fresno and my little bog setup on the south porch cooked. I had them in a tray of water like always, but the water got so warm it felt like bathwater by noon, and the rhizomes basically turned to mush. What kills me is my neighbors across the street had theirs under a shade cloth and every single one pulled through fine. I'm now running a cheap thermometer in the water tray and moving everything to the east side after 11am, but I'm wondering if anyone here uses frozen water bottles in the tray during heat spells and whether that actually helps or just shocks the roots.
104 degrees for four days straight is brutal, I don't know how anything survives that. But the part that gets me is the bathwater tray. I've never once thought about the water itself getting hot enough to cook the rhizomes. I always figured if they're sitting in water they're fine, end of story. That would explain why mine went limp so fast in that June stretch we had here (I blamed the sun the whole time). So the water basically turned into soup and steamed them from the bottom up? That is wild.
