My neighbor said my raised beds looked like a 'plant graveyard' because I was overwatering everything, so I bought a $12 moisture meter and now I actually wait for the soil to dry out.

Anyone else have a simple piece of advice that totally fixed a bad habit you didn't even know you had?

Oh man, I read that overwatering is the number one plant killer.

Craig's totally right about it being the top killer. It's wild how we treat plants like pets, thinking more water equals more love. That moisture meter trick is genius because it takes the guesswork out. My own bad habit was using pots without drainage holes because they looked nicer, and it caused the same soggy death. Learning to check for dry soil first changed everything.

My fiddle leaf fig was dropping leaves like crazy until I switched to a strict schedule. I only water it every 12 days now, and I always stick my finger two inches deep to check. It's been pushing out new growth for three months straight. That simple change saved it from the same root rot that killed my last one.
