My Venus flytrap died after I fed it a bug from outside last week

I caught a beetle in my backyard and dropped it in the trap, but it turned black and rotted within three days. Did I just get unlucky or is there a right way to feed these things?

Yeah the "too big for the trap" thing is real. I did the same thing with a fat housefly once and it was a total mess, like a tiny crime scene. You gotta use bugs small enough that the trap seals shut completely, otherwise it just sits there and decays. I felt like a plant murderer for a week.

Was the beetle maybe too big for the trap? I've heard they can rot if they can't close all the way.

My first flytrap died the same way. The beetle was probably too big, so the trap couldn't seal and digest it properly. That gap lets bacteria in and the whole thing just rots from the inside out. Have you tried using much smaller bugs since then?
