Raked joints vs flush joints on a wet week in Seattle

I had a retaining wall job near Ballard last March and had to choose between raked joints for looks or flush joints for weather resistance. The customer wanted raked but I leaned flush because of the constant rain, and we went with raked in the end after he insisted. The wall stained and trapped moisture in three spots, so would you push back harder on the customer or just do the work as asked?
