Rant: dropped $340 on a hydraulic splitter for cutting brick and it's the only money I regret spending this year
Bought it in March thinking it would speed up chimney tear-outs, but it won't touch hard fired brick without chipping the face, so it's been sitting in my truck since April and I'm back to the chisel and hammer like always, has anyone found a splitter that actually works on brick or did I just waste three hundred bucks?

Used to figure any splitter would chew through brick if you just had enough tonnage. Then I watched a guy wreck a whole pallet of good fired brick with a 12 ton electric one and it clicked for me. Brick isn't wood, it doesn't split along a grain, it just shatters wherever the pressure lands, so the face blows out every time. What finally changed my mind was learning the guys doing clean tear-outs still score the mortar and pop bricks with a chisel, or use a masonry saw when they need it fast. That three hundred might sting, but at least you found out cheap instead of after wrecking a chimney you had to rebuild.
