That foreman in Omaha told me my joints were too fat, he was right

I was laying a retaining wall out by the interstate and this old foreman walks over, watches me for a minute, then says my mortar joints were eating up more material than the blocks. He showed me how to keep them at a tight 3/8 inch by using a gauge rod instead of eyeballing it, and I cut my waste by almost half on that job. Has anyone else had a boss or inspector point out something that felt picky but ended up saving you money?

So did he show you the trick with the rod just that once, or did he make you use it on every joint til you had it down?
