The apprentice asked why I still snap my lines with chalk

Last Tuesday this kid fresh out of the program watched me set up a corner on a backyard wall in Columbus. He had a laser level in his hand and asked why I was still snapping lines with a chalk box. I told him it's about the feel, the snap leaves a reference that don't lie when the sun hits it sideways. He didn't get it, but I remember my own foreman back in '97 saying the same thing to me. We use lasers for the big stuff now, sure, but for a 40 foot run of block, I trust a good snap every time. It got me thinking about how much gear we lean on now versus what we carry in our heads. Anyone else still do the old school methods just because they work better on certain days?
