Dropped $18 on a cast iron skillet at a garage sale and my grocery bill went down $40 a month
I used to buy the cheap nonstick pans every 8 months because they'd scratch up, which was costing me around $15 each time at Walmart. Found a rusty Lodge skillet at a garage sale in Akron for $18, scrubbed it with steel wool for an hour, and now I cook everything in it. Eggs, chicken, potatoes, all of it, and stuff actually tastes better so I'm not ordering takeout as much. Has anyone else noticed their food bill drop after switching to one pan instead of a cabinet full of junk?
My dumb self bought three different fancy pans over two years thinking each one would fix my cooking, and all it did was drain my wallet and clutter my cabinets. Then my sister hands me her old cast iron that sat in her garage for a decade, I scrub the heck out of it, and suddenly I'm making hash browns that don't stick and chicken with a crust I could never get before. I stopped grabbing fast food on the way home because cooking in that thing is actually fun now. That alone saved me way more than the pan ever cost. My only regret is not doing this sooner instead of wasting cash on pans that peel after a few months.
