Found out my grandma's bean soup costs $1.87 a pot and feeds me for 3 dinners
I was cleaning out my grandma's recipe box last month and found her old notebook where she wrote the price of everything next to each recipe, which I always thought was weird. Anyway, her ham and bean soup said "18 cents a bowl, 1974" so I got curious and priced it out at Aldi last week. Dried beans, an onion, carrots, celery, and a ham hock came to $1.87 total, and that pot gave me three dinners plus two lunches. Has anyone else tried pricing out old family recipes like this? I want to know if the cheap ones actually stayed cheap or if everything crept up over the years.
Wait, 18 cents a bowl in 1974? That is wild to me. I knew food was cheaper back then but seeing it written down like that really hits different. A ham hock alone costs me like four bucks now unless I catch a sale. Your grandma was basically running a restaurant for pennies and I bet she never even thought twice about it.
