Hit $47 on my weekly grocery run and had to sit down in the Aldi parking lot
I used to think eating cheap meant rice and beans every night, so I never bothered trying to budget my food. Last month I started writing down every single thing I bought and what it cost, just to see the damage. When I added it up after 4 weeks, my average trip dropped from $96 to $47 and I was still eating chicken, eggs, and fresh veggies. The big change was buying the family packs of meat and splitting them into 6 or 7 bags before freezing, plus grabbing the markdown produce rack on Tuesday mornings. I also quit buying lunch at the deli near work and that alone was $9 a day. Now I'm wondering if I can get it under $40 without living on pasta. Has anyone had luck with a freezer bag system for a 2 person household?
Saw a video from a mom who feeds her family of four on $50 a week using a vacuum sealer and she swears the bags pay for themselves in two months. She buys the big packs when they go on sale, portions them out, and writes the date and weight right on the bag with a marker so nothing turns into a mystery brick at the bottom of the freezer. For a two person house you could probably skip the sealer and just use cheap zip bags with the air squeezed out, since you'll eat through it fast enough. The real trick she mentioned was making a list taped to the freezer door so you actually use what you froze instead of buying more. That part is where most people lose their savings, not the shopping itself. Getting under $40 sounds doable if you keep the deli lunch cut and work the markdown rack harder.
