I ate on $37 for a whole week of dinners and the number that shocked me was 11
Last week my fridge was basically empty and payday was 6 days out, so I gave myself a $40 dinner budget and tried to see how far it would go. I ended up spending $37.12 at the Kroger on Elm and fed myself 11 full dinners off that, which I did not think was possible. The trick was a 10 lb bag of potatoes for $4.99, a dozen eggs, dried black beans, and whatever yellow sticker meat was marked down that day. Night 4 was beans and rice with a fried egg on top and honestly it beat the $14 takeout I usually cave on. The weird part is I still have half the beans left, so technically the real number is lower than 11. What is your go-to cheap dinner when the money runs out early? I need more ideas before next week.
Wait, the beans being left over does not make the real number lower than 11, it makes your cost per dinner lower. That is the part people mix up all the time. If you spent $37.12 and got 11 dinners out of it, that is about $3.37 a plate, and the leftover beans just mean dinner 12 is basically free. The number of dinners is still 11 for that money, the price per dinner is what drops. I only say this because I used to do the same math and talk myself into thinking I ate for less than I did. Still a solid run though, $3.37 a plate beats anything you can get out the door. My go to when I am broke is a big pot of potato and egg hash with onions, cheap and it sticks with you.
