My grandma said to add a potato to the soup pot to stretch it, and she was right
My grandma grew up in a family of 9 kids near Scranton and she always said when money was tight you just toss a diced potato in whatever pot you got going. I always kind of rolled my eyes at that growing up. Last winter I was trying to feed me and my two roommates on about $30 a week for groceries, and things were getting rough by Thursday. So I made a big pot of bean soup, threw in three potatoes I got for $1.29 at the corner market, and that pot fed all three of us for two dinners and a lunch. The potatoes made it thick and filling in a way rice never does for me, and nobody complained about being hungry after. Now I do it with chili and even with cheap ramen when I want it to feel like an actual meal. What are the other old school tricks like this that actually hold up?
My buddy Marcus did the same thing with a can of black beans and two sweet potatoes last month when his paycheck came up short. Fed him and his girlfriend for like three days and he said the sweet potato made it sweet enough that he didnt even miss the meat.
