Showerthought: canned beans beat dried beans for my weekly meal prep and it's not even close
I used to buy the big 4 pound bag of dried pinto beans for about $3 and soak them overnight every Sunday, but I'd always forget to start them early enough and end up eating cereal for dinner. Last month I grabbed 6 cans of beans for $0.89 each at Kroger in Dayton and made a whole pot of chili in 25 minutes flat, no soaking, no planning ahead. The dried ones taste a little better if I'm being honest but the cans saved me so many nights of scrambling, and honestly a can of beans plus rice and frozen veggies feeds me for like $1.50 a meal. Has anyone found a cheap way to make dried beans work without the overnight soak, like a quick soak trick that actually works?
Six cans for under a buck each is wild to me because around here they want $1.50 a can unless you catch a sale. The part that really gets me is the cereal for dinner thing, been there way too many times. I have tried the quick soak where you boil them for a couple minutes then let them sit an hour, and it sort of works but the beans still come out a little firm in the middle sometimes. What actually saved me was cooking a big batch on the weekend and freezing them in two cup portions, then you just grab one like a can. Still not as fast as popping a lid but it is close, and you get that better taste you mentioned.
