TIL the dented can bin at my Kroger in Dayton is basically half off dinner
I used to walk right past that cart by the back aisle thinking it was all damaged junk, but last week I grabbed 6 cans of diced tomatoes for $2.10 total and made a whole pot of chili that fed me 4 nights, so now I'm wondering what other stores do this and whether the stuff in there is actually fine or if I just got lucky.
Dented cans are fine for most things, but the discount cart isn't always half off. At the Kroger near me in Columbus the dented stuff gets marked down maybe 30 percent, not 50, and it depends on the store manager. The real catch is what's in the can. A small dent on the side or top rim is harmless, but if the seam is bent or the can is bulging, skip it, because that's where bacteria can get in. Also check the date, since a lot of that cart is just closeout stuff, not damaged at all. Tomatoes for chili are a safe bet because you cook them down anyway, so you didn't get lucky, you just picked the right thing.
