A traveler in line at a hostel in Lisbon told me she flies with only a 28 liter bag and I haven't stopped thinking about it
She said she paid for a carry on once in 2019 and never again, and she's done 40 countries since. The math stuck with me because checked bags on a round trip can run $70 or more, which is two or three nights in a hostel dorm in most of Europe. I used to pack a 45 liter and still check it half the time. Now I'm wondering how much of my packing is just habit rather than need. Anyone here actually gone down to a personal item and stayed there for a long trip?
Budget airlines in Europe are way stricter than US ones, so her personal item thing probably means a tiny underseat bag, not a normal carry on. Still impressive though, most people can't even do a weekend with that little.
