Hostel kitchen in Mexico City changed my grocery game
Last month I watched a guy cook a full dinner for $2.50 using a hot plate and a plastic colander, so I ditched my $14 daily eating out and now I pack a collapsible steamer for every trip, anyone else found weird hostel tricks that beat normal budget advice?

My own hostel kitchen experiments usually end with me setting off the fire alarm trying to boil an egg, so I admire anyone who can make a full meal for pocket change. That collapsible steamer is a clever idea, though I'd probably manage to lose it in my bag before ever unpacking it. I once tried to save money by buying a bag of rice and a single tomato, which turned into three sad dinners and a very confused hostel staff. The real trick for me seems to be accepting that my cooking skills max out at toast, so I just scout for hostels with free breakfast and eat double portions. Still, seeing someone cook that cheaply does make me want to try again, even if my version of "homemade" usually means instant noodles with extra steps.

It's funny how everyone draws their own line in the sand for what they'll attempt, whether it's cooking, fixing a bike, or parallel parking, and we all just build our routines around that one wall. At some point you stop feeling bad about it and just get really good at knowing where the nearest decent breakfast place is.
