Shoutout to the guy who said hostels are always the cheapest option
I booked a hostel in Lisbon for a week, thinking I was set. The place was full, so they moved me to a sister property across town. That took an hour to sort out. Then the new spot had a broken lock on my dorm door, which needed a repair person. All told, from check in to finally getting into a secure room, it was a solid 3 hour mess. Has anyone else found that a cheap hotel room can sometimes save more time and money than a hostel headache?

Oh man, my last hostel had a shower that was just a drain in the floor and a hose on the wall. Felt like I was washing a car, not myself. You start adding up the time lost and the stress, and that cheap hotel room down the street starts looking pretty smart, doesn't it?

Ugh, that's the worst... Honestly, the hidden cost is the mental load. After a long travel day, I just want my space to be a sure thing, not another puzzle to solve.

Honestly though, that's just bad luck. Most hostels I've been to are run just fine and you meet way cooler people than in some lonely hotel room. The money you save adds up fast, especially on longer trips. A few hours of hassle once in a while is worth it for the extra cash and the real travel experience. Hotels feel so sterile and boring to me. I'd take a chance on a fun hostel over a safe hotel any day.
