Tried the $8 tent repair tape trick in a monsoon, woke up in a puddle anyway

Last June I patched a split seam on my old Eureka at a campsite near Olympic National Park with that cheap gorilla tape, figured it'd hold for one night. Rain came at 3am and the tape peeled right off, so I spent the rest of the trip sleeping in my car. Anyone else have a budget fix that failed exactly when it mattered most?

Ranger told me duct tape fixes everything, so I fixed my canoe with it. Sank in 20 minutes.
