I finally had that awkward money talk with my buddy after a camping trip gone wrong

Me and a buddy split the cost of a 4-day camping trip to Big Bend last spring. He brought almost nothing and I ended up covering $320 in groceries and gear without saying anything until we got back. Now I'm debating whether to just ask friends up front for a cash split before trips or keep it chill and risk getting stuck with the bill again. How do you guys handle money with friends without making it weird?

Just ask for cash upfront. It's way easier to split before the trip than try to collect after. Nobody wants to be the guy chasing their buddy for $40 in camp stove fuel.

And honestly, getting cash upfront makes people actually think about what they're agreeing to. Nobody wants to hand over $60 for a trip they're not committed to. It's like a deposit, keeps everyone honest and saves the awkward collection later.

@margaret551 nailed it. Cash upfront saves friendships every time.
