My neighbor saw my grocery receipt and asked why I was still buying name brand beans.

Name brand beans" aren't a splurge if the store brand tastes like salty mush.

I saw a food writer say the bean liquid quality is totally different between brands. The cheap ones often overcook them into that mushy texture. So paying a bit more actually gets you a better ingredient, not just a fancy label.

Unless you're making chili for your worst enemy.

My mom always drains and rinses her beans for chili, no matter the brand. She says it gets rid of that extra salt and starch. I get what maryr43 is saying about quality, but the liquid in the can is mostly for storage. You're going to season the chili yourself anyway. So even cheap beans can work fine if you give them a quick rinse first.
