Spent 6 weeks on a budget app spreadsheet that barely works
I figured it would take an afternoon to move my grocery spending into a tracking sheet, but I kept running into formatting issues and total columns that just refused to add up right. After six weeks of tweaking formulas in Google Sheets, I finally realized the problem was my own data entry, not the tool, and now my monthly categories actually balance. Cost me about 14 hours total, which is embarrassing, but the $210 I found by spotting a recurring subscription fee made it worth it. Has anyone else sunk way too much time into the setup phase before seeing any real payoff?

The whole "14 hours just to get it working" thing really hits home because it feels like everything in life has this hidden setup tax these days. I mean, even something as simple as organizing a closet or meal planning for the week takes way longer than the youtube video promises. Maybe it's just me but everyone I know has that one project that turned into a whole weekend, and then you stand back and think "well, at least I did it" even though it makes you question your basic math skills. The $210 payoff definitely makes it a win though, most of us sink that time and get nothing but a half-finished folder of spreadsheets we never open again. It's wild how the real lesson ends up being about our own messy habits, not the tools we blame for so long.
