TIL most people's 'emergency fund' is way too small to actually help
I keep seeing posts where people are proud of saving $500 or even $1,000 for emergencies. That's a start, but it's not a real safety net. My car's transmission went out last month, and the repair was $2,800. A single medical bill or job loss would wipe out those tiny funds in a day. How can you call it a win if it doesn't cover a real problem? What's the biggest emergency cost you've actually had to cover?

Yeah, that's the fun part about adult life. You finally save up what feels like a big number, and then the universe sends a bill for exactly that amount plus twenty bucks. My "win" was a basement drain backing up, which cost about as much as a cheap used car to fix. Really makes you feel like you're getting ahead.

Wait, people are calling $500 an emergency fund? That's barely a flat tire and a doctor's copay. My dog ate something weird last year and the vet bill was over three grand. You're totally right, a small fund just gives a false sense of security.
