inWhy does nobody talk about the tax hit from big one-off payments?
Right, because missing out on earning more really sounds like a huge problem here.

inMy slow cooker lid shattered while I was making lentil soup last Tuesday
Oh man, 45 minutes? That's brutal... I'd have just tossed the whole thing after the first 10 minutes and ordered takeout. I had a similar thing happen with a Pyrex measuring cup once, it just popped in my hands while I was pouring hot broth. No warning at all, just glass everywhere. For a slow cooker lid to do that while it's just sitting there cooking, that's really messed up. Lentil soup is supposed to be the easy, cheap meal, not a glass-hunting mission.

inHot take: The coffee shop downtown has a public Wi-Fi sign with no security warning at all.
And honestly I'm probably the BIGGEST sucker for this stuff. I clicked on "McDonalds_Free_WiFi_Real" once at a rest stop and waited five minutes for a login page that never loaded before I realized what I'd done.

inThat time a client tried to pay me in 'exposure' at a coffee shop in Austin
Right @shane_morgan, did that guy ACTUALLY think "a cut of future profits" was gonna pay your rent? That kombucha must be REALLY special if it's gonna cover your car payment AND groceries at the same time lol.

inTried stacking 200 photos of Andromeda and got a worse result than with 50
Exactly. The same thing happens with audio recordings too. If you layer too many takes on top of each other, all the little timing errors and background noise pile up and you lose the clarity you were after. Quality control on the front end saves you from having to fix a mess later.
