Dropped $340 on a Haccp temp log app and went back to a $4 notebook
Bought one of those subscription temp tracking apps for my walk in and display case back in January, paid $340 for the year up front. The bluetooth probe kept dropping the signal every time I walked into the freezer, so I was re-entering numbers by hand anyway, which is the whole thing I was trying to avoid. Health inspector in Des Moines actually said she prefers seeing a paper log with pen marks because she knows it was filled out in real time. Anybody found a probe that holds a signal through a steel door, or am I just stuck with the clipboard forever?
Bluetooth through a steel door is just physics working against you, the box acts like a faraday cage and no probe on the market is getting around that. What actually works is a wired probe with a pass-through grommet, you drill a small hole in the door frame or wall, run the cord through, seal it with food grade silicone, and the unit stays outside the box. That way the signal never has to leave the freezer at all. Kind of funny that the fix costs like $30 and a tube of caulk when the app was $340.
