A $1 roll of painter's tape saved a $900 miter joint after my clamp slipped
Last Thursday I was gluing up a walnut face frame for a client in Portland and the clamp slipped right as I tightened it, pulling the joint open about 1/8 inch. I grabbed a roll of 3M painter's tape, wrapped the joint tight like I was taping a hockey stick, and it held the gap closed perfectly while the glue dried. Does anyone else keep tape in their clamp bucket, or am I the only one taping joints like that?
Wait, 1/8 inch on a walnut face frame? That's a huge gap to pull shut with just tape. I've used tape for small stuff but never trusted it with that much spring back in the wood. Did the tape actually hold it flush or did you still have to fight it when you pulled the clamps off?
